Any tips for traveling I-10 through the desert?

I plan on going on May 7th (starting in LA), car camping in National Parks, and birding along the way. My destination is Truckee, CA. My priorities are to see beautiful landscapes, wildlife, wild flowers, birds, etc. I may stop at Big Bend NP, Saguaro NP, Joshua Tree, Death Valley. Any other places I should stop? Is I-10 a fast road? Boring? Empty? Any advice you could give would be helpful. Thanks.

Th I-10 spends a large amount of time in the desert without a lot of scenery to look at. I highly recommend taking plenty of water with you. Other than when passing through urban areas, you should be able to make pretty good time.

One stop I would recommend that you make is Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. It is actually closer to the 10 than Big Bend so I don't think you mind going a little out of your way.

If you are not on a time schedule, I would recommend taking the 395 through California rather than the 5. The 395 runs on the east side of the Sierra Nevadas and has some really nice scenery. Sights along the 395 include the Manzanar Interment camp from WWII and the Mammoth Ski Resort area which has Devil's Postpile NM nearby. If the road is open, you can also go into Yosemite from the east side. The 395 will take you into Nevada and you can head over the mountains into Lake Tahoe then on to Truckee. In Nevada, you might want to check out Carson City and Virginia City.
Reply:Drive on the right side of the road.
Reply:Just to go early morning, before the heat is worse. Plus thats the best time for wildlife.
Reply:worth stopping in Palm Springs/Palm Desert and anza borrego, the salton sea is a little out of the way, but a bit of a trip
